Stephen C Vasaly
(8 Jul 1860 - 7 Mar 1931)
Stephen was born in Italy and immigrated to Minnesota as a young boy with his parents. His father, Louis, was a soldier. He was a veteran of three wars. He was a native of Italy and was a soldier in the Sardinian army and was present at the battle of Novara in 1849, which was fought between the Sardinians and Austrians. He was an officier in the Sardinian cavalry at the time of the Crimean war and took part in the storming of Sevastapol. In 1863, he came to the US and soon enlisted in Co A of 10th US infantry. He served until the end of the Civil War. He took part in the Siege of Vicksburg and the battles of that campaign. Later his regiment was stationed at Fort Ripley in Minnesota. After he was discharged he was post trader at Fort Ripley. He went back to Italy and returned to Fort Ripley with his wife and two children (Stephen and his sister) in 1869. He operated the store at Fort Ripley until 1871 and then moved to Little Falls where he remained. He operated a hotel called Vasaly House, a drug store and feed stores nefore he retired.
Stephen's parents are also buried in Calvary Cemetery as are most of his siblings. His wife Felicite Fortier was French Canadian from Quebec, Canada and immigrated to US in 1907 presumably after they were married. Stephen was 46 and Felicite was 24 when they were married.
Stephen was an attorney in Little Falls.
His Italian name - Stephano Celte Morino
