Individual Details
(9 Aug 1580 - 1649)
Of Puddington (formerly Pontington). William was knighted by King James I at Chester in 1617, in spite of laws already passed against Catholics. He was one of the commissioners who collected the subsidy of 1625. He supported King Charles I against the Protestant forces of Oliver Cromwell, but Charles was defeated and excuted in 1649. Sir William dies the same year, and his ancestral home, Puddington Hall, was severly damaged by fire. His two oldest sons died without children, probably in those battles. His son Edward inherited what was left of the family estate and fortunes.
