Biography

Gregory Stone came from Nayland, Suffolk. He was admitted to Massachusetts Bay freemanship on May 25, 1636, indicating that he probably migrated in 1635. He first lived in Watertown, and moved to Cambridge in 1637. He was baptized at Great Bromley, Essex, April 19, 1592, the son of David Stone. He died in Cambridge November 30, 1672. He was married twice. On July 20, 1617, in Nayland, Suffolk, he married his first wife, Margaret Garrad, the daughter of Thomas Garrad. Margaret died in 1626. By 1628 Gregory had married Lydia ____, the widow of ____ Cooper. Gregory and Margaret had 4 children: John, Daniel, David, and Elizabeth, who died before she was 2. Gregory and Lydia had 3 children: Elizabeth, Samuel, and Sarah. Gregory Stone’s brother was Simon Stone.[1]
Origin

Gregory was christened on 19 April 1592, at Great Bromley, Essex, England, son of David Stone.[1][2] He was the youngest of David Stone's eleven children, the first seven by his first wife, Elizabeth Hewett, and the other four by his second wife, Ursula Unknown.[2]
Evidently the date of his christening was unknown to the descendants who erected a memorial stone at the Old Burial Ground in Cambridge, because they placed the date of his birth as 1690.[3]
Gregory received at least some education in England, more than was customary for a yeoman and husbandman.[2] He signed his deeds and will, and his estate included "a Bible and psalm book" as well as "three printed books."[1] Unfortunately no record of his younger years has survived.
Immigration

Gregory and his brother Deacon Simon Stone emigrated to America about the same time (c1635), although Gregory's ship is not known. He came over from England in about 1635, being accompanied by his wife Lydia (the widow Cooper), and six children: John, born about 1619, Daniel, David, Elizabeth, Sarah and Samuel, together with two children of Mrs. Stone by her first husband. He initially settled at Watertown where he received freemanship on 25 May 1636, and then later settled in Cambridge while Simon remained at Watertown. Although their homes were within different town boundaries, they were only a mile apart. Deacon Stone became prominent both in church and state at Cambridge. [4]
Marriages and Children

Gregory married twice.
He married on 20 July 1617 at co. Nayland, Suffolk, England, to Margaret Garrad, daughter of Thomas Garrad.[1] Margaret Garrard was baptized 5 Dec. 1597 and buried 4 Aug. 1626. He and Margaret lived at Nayland until she died was buried on 4 August 1626 at Nayland.
He married by 1628, as his 2nd, to widow Lydia (Unknown) Cooper.[1] They married at Dedham, England.[citation needed] She died on 24 June 1674 at Cambridge, MA[1] and was buried at King's Chapel, Old Cambridge Cemetery.[citation needed] She had two children by her first husband, John Cooper and Lydia Cooper.[2]
