SIDNEY - Funeral service for Mike Osterman, 70, of Sidney, is 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at the People's Congregational Church, with Pastor Neil Lindorff officiating.
Interment will be in the Sidney Cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home of Sidney. Memorials can be made to the Foundation for Community Care and the Cancer Center or the charity of your choice.
Mike was born to William and Blanche (Reichert) Osterman on April 19, 1940, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., the oldest of 12 children. He attended Rose Lake School in Frazee, Minn. He would cross the frozen Rose Lake to start the fire before school started every winter school day. As a young man, he worked at various jobs, including a stable hand on a horse farm in Seattle, road work, silo building, traveling with grain harvest and threshing crews across North Dakota and Montana. He moved to Kenosha, Wis., at age 21 to work in the American Motors car factory. After his father's death, he moved to the Fairview/Sidney area the spring of 1969 to operate a saw mill.
Mike married Sylvia Westlake in Sidney on Nov. 21, 1971, at People's Congregational Church. Mike made and sold pallets from the cottonwood he sawed. He hauled all his own lumber and branched out into other trucking endeavors hauling grain and soda ash. For 27 years, Mike hauled Christmas trees from western Montana for his wife Sylvia to sell. For many years, he hauled cattle from Montana to Long Prairie, Minn., and other areas until retiring in 2007.
Mike's hobbies included hunting, fishing (also eating the fish that he caught), watching the rabbits in the yard that he fed daily and collecting old vehicles. Mike never went any place without his black Stetson.
Mike died on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Mike is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 39 years, Sidney; his daughters from a previous marriage, Shelly (Keith) Martin, Mansfield, Ohio, Lori Bristow, Elyria, Ohio, and Rene (Jeff) Sugaski, Elyria, Ohio; brothers, Raymond (Helen) Osterman, Glendive, Jeff Osterman, Battle Lake, Minn., Brett (Becky) Osterman, Sylva, N.C., Sidney "Sid" Osterman, Pequot Lake, Minn.; sisters Patricia Osterman, Kent, Wash., Paulette (Jack) Davis, League City, Texas, Sandra (Gary) Armstead, Fort Bidwell, Calif., Margaret (Dave) Dobey, Glendive, and Laurie Castro, Glendive; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
