Some Merriams and Their Connection with Other Families by Rufus N Meriam, Worcester, Mass; Private Press of Franklin P Rice.
1888. Reprinted from the Proceedings of The Worcester Society of Antiquity for 1887.
Rufus N Meriam: in Some Meriams writes, p6: In a pleasant little village in this County (Kent), called Hadlow, lived, died, and on September 23, 1635 was buried William Miriam. From him are descended all in this country who legitimately bear his name, spelt either with one or two r's, or as is now universally the case, with e instead or i preceding the r. I say legitimately, for there are some who go by this name who are not Meriams; notably some of the descendants of John Marion of Watertown and Boston, a Welchman, whose name is spelt several different ways in the Boston records, and by Savage erroneously mixed up with the genuine Meriam stock. Such undoubtedly are the Ashburnham Merriams named in Mercy Hale's memoir of the Lawrence families, and in recent town history, one of whom Otis, recently, died in Chelsea, MA. Joel Merriam, who recently died in Worcester, and whose widow, children, and grandchildren now reside here, was a native of Westminster, in this county, and his father's name was Perry, but for reasons which his widow declines to give, he and one of his brothers changed their names to Merriam. It is well to make record of such facts, as it may save the family historian from going astray.
========
p. 7:William Miriam was by trade a clothier, of an untitled family with no coat of arms. But he was quite wealthy, owning land in Hadlow, where he resided, Goodhurst, Yalding, and Tudeley, all small villages near Tunbridge. From his will we learn that his wife's name was Sara, he had 5 daughters: Susan, Margaret, Joane, Sara, and one other, then deceased, who married a Howe, and three sons: Joseph, George and Robert.He also mentions his grandchildren by the name of Howe, his granddaughter Mary, daughter of George, grandson William, son of Joseph, and appoints his son Robert sole executor.

Biography

William Merriam was born May 11, 1564, in Kent, England to William Merriam, Sr. and Alice Hablett. He married Sarah Burges about 1580 in Kent. They had eight children during their marriage. Three of his sons emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony: Joseph, Robert, and George. He died on November 27, 1635, in Hadlow, Kent, at the age of 71.
"William Merriam, the first fully authenticated ancestor of this family, was a resident of the county of Kent, England, during the latter part of the sixteenth century. He was a clothier, which meant in those days that he made cloth and handled the manufactured goods. The business required more than ordinary intelligence, and was usually very profitable. His wife's name was Sara[h], and eight children are recorded, though the order of their births is not known: Susan, Margaret, a daughter who married Thomas Howe; Joseph, whose sketch follows; George, born about 1603; Joane; Sarah and Robert, born about 1613. The Will of William Merriam of Harlow in Kent, was proved November 27, 1636."[1]

11 May 1564 is the date of baptism in Goudhurst, Kent, England along with that of sister Joane. Not certain if they are twins although baptisms were normally performed shortly after birth.posted Mar 11, 2021 by Mike Dobson J Stewart EsqThere is also a Find-A-Grave entry for Alice (Apse) Piper which states she is William Merriam's **second** wife.
