Mathew L. Reichert long time resident of Maple Valley died at his home in Graham Washington at 1:15 p.m. Monday April 30, 2007.
"Louie", as Mathew was called by those who knew him well, was born at St Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes Minnesota on March 28, 1927.He was the last surviving member of a family of 11 brothers and sisters. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army stationed both in the U.S. and in Europe.
In July 1948 he married Grace Brunette from White Earth Minnesota. They were married at Fort Ord in California. At the time of his death, Louie and Grace had been married over 58 years. In 1950 they moved to the Renton Highlands area where he took a job at the Renton Boeing plant.
Over the next 50 years the Mathew and Grace Reichert family grew to include 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins most living in the greater Seattle area.
Their children: Suzanne and Gary Egeland Maple Valley; Michael and Dawn Reichert Maple Valley; Mathew "Lee" and Sally Reichert Black Diamond;
Robert Reichert Black Diamond; Paul and Susan Reichert Graham;Chris and Darlene Reichert Maple Valley Heights and grandchildren: Cynthia, Chante, Jesse, Keri, Lisa, Logan, Megan, Melanie, Michelle, Paulie, Sarah, Rachel, and Rusty.
In 1957 the family moved to Ravensdale. All of the children attended Tahoma Schools and they, along with a very large extended family, have continued to be part of the greater Maple Valley community for the last 50 years. Members of the Reichert clan, where Louie served as ranking elder and favorite uncle, are involved in Public safety, Education, Law Enforcement, Commercial housing/real estate development, music and the arts, Social Services, affordable Housing, Youth Athletics, mortgage lending, the law, aero space manufacturing, health care and political office.
Louie began work at Pacific Car and Foundry in 1952 where he worked 27 years until 1979. Following his retirement from Pac Car he took a job with Mc Lendon's Hardware in Renton for whom he worked an additional 13 years. He retired from Mc Lendon's in 1992.
In his retirement He and Grace enjoyed visiting their grandchildren, traveling extensively in the western U.S., and "commuting" back and forth between their present home in Graham and a second residence they owned in northern Minnesota.
His lifetime passions included: Faith and Religion - He was an active member of the Saint Barbara Catholic Parish in Black Diamond for many years where he helped lead efforts to modernize the Saint Barbara Church and build a new parish hall; Politics - He was a Franklin Roosevelt / New Deal, John Kennedy / New Frontier Democrat for all his adult life. He championed the basic human rights of everyone but particularly advocated for the poor and most vulnerable. He staunchly defended organized labor and strongly believed in the rights of the working man.
He loved baseball and spent many summers coaching little league and Babe Ruth ball teams in the Maple Valley area.
He was blessed with an exceptional intellect and extraordinary sense of humor. Few who met him could resist the gentle almost loving way he employed his wit and wisdom to lower your defenses and draw you in to what ever it was he had in mind for you. He truly was a man of laughter, love and joy.
Above all else Mathew "Louie" Reichert loved his family. With a very clear sense of right and wrong and an unwavering commitment to loving and providing for his wife and children, he far exceeded his duty as family leader and helped make his local community a much better and happier place to live.
