Isingen, Baden-Wurtemberg
Was a small village 9 Kilometers from Neckar River
After 1816 many left Germany for America for better lives - Food was scarce - prices were high and the harvests were poor.
Wurttemberg issued 3000 passes that winter to emigrants. The Grand Duchy of Baden issued passes for 18,000 or 2% of Duchy's population.
In villages of early modern Germany those who owned, rented or controlled enough land to feed their families or who were prosperous merchants, innkeepers or millers, life could be pleasant. For those with no land or not enough, life was uncertain, desperate struggle for survivval.
Troops from recently ended Napoleonic Wars had, over last several years, been confiscating what little food villagers had been able to grow to pay for the wars. Villagers forced to give more than 1/2 harvest in taxes in addition to their usual burdens of rent, tithes and fees.
