Bartholomew was born November 10, 1740 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts. He was the son of Benjamin Woodbury and Ruth Conant. [1] [2] Bartholomew and his brother Jonathan were twins, born the same day.
Bartholomew Woodbury married Ruth Greenwood May 15, 1763 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts. [1] [2]
Bartholomew and Ruth Woodbury had children born in Sutton, including Sally (1764-1840), Lot (1767-1803), Naomi (1769-1775), Asa (1771-), Bartholomew (1774-1775), and Prudence (1779-), and possibly others.
Col. Bartholomew Woodbury was an officer in the American Revolution. He was a Lieutenant in a Capt. Arthur Dagget's Minuteman company in Col. Ebenezer Learned's regt. of Worcester County, Massachusetts. See also: Col. Ebenezer Learned's Regiment. After Daggett died of camp disease in August, he became Captain of the company. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
He is listed as both a Major and Colonel in the History of the town of Sutton, Massachusetts, from 1704 to 1876, and he was a Selectman of Sutton in multiple years between 1783 and 1801. [8]
From the "Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Book (1907)", "Bartholomew Woodbury (1740-1819) served as colonel of militia and was prominent in town affairs. He was born and died in Sutton." [9]
Col. Bartholomew Woodbury operated an inn along a road from Boston to Springfield. From the book The records of Oxford, Mass....., "There were milestones placed all the way along this " Old Connecticut road" from Boston to Springfield. On the southerly front of the site of the house of Col. Woodbury in Sutton stands the queen of all milestones; it is of red sandstone, five feet in height, two feet wide and eight inches in thickness, with this inscription :

Col. Bartholomew Woodbury of Sutton was the proprietor of a country inn which was with a fine landed estate situated on this " Old Connecticut road." Col. Woodbury offered the commissioners, who were directing the sites of the milestones, if they would make the last mile a little less than its limit, placing it near to bis house, that it might attract travellers, he would be at the expense of erecting the milestone, and that it should excel all others en route from Boston to Springfield on this same Old Connecticut road.". [10]
Bartholomew Woodbury died June 7, 1819 in Sutton, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. [1] [2]
