Moses Putnam was graduated from Harvard College in 1759. He taught school a while in Boxford, Massachusetts, and in 1776 or thereabouts, removed to Wilton, New Hampsire. There he obtained the respect and trust of the people and on 9 March, 1778, was elected one of the committee of safety, served as selectman for several years, and was often on important committees. In 1778, he was chosen to represent the town in convention to be holden at Concord for "establishing some regulations by which our sinking currency may be raised and set upon some more stable basis."
