The son of John Bailey and Eleanor Emery, he married Mary Carr on Sept. 17, 1672 in Newbury, Massachusetts. After Mary Carr died on Oct 28, 1688, James married another woman named Mary (maiden name unknown). His second wife died October 23, 1717.
James was a graduate of Harvard College in 1669 and became a freeman in May, 1673. He was a preacher in Salem village (now Danvers). "Mrs. Bayly" was admitted to the Salisbury Church on July 20, 1699. He died Jun, 18, 1707 in Roxbury and the widow declined administration of his estate.
