William R. "Bill" Yager, 65, of 404 Jarvis Ave, former owner of the old Sorbi's Restaurant at 190 High St., and a retired letter carrier for the Postal Service, died Monday in Holyoke Soldiers' ahome. He retired in 1986.

Born in Holyoke, March 9, 1924, he was the son of the late William C. and Mary (O'Donnell) Yager. A lifelong resident of Holyoke, he attended the former Rosary Schools and Rosary High School.

He was an Army sergeant in World War II and served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater.

He belonged to American Legion Post 351 and the National Association of Letter Carriers.

He leaves several cousins, including Doris Mayer of Easthampton.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:15 am at Dillon Funeral Home, 124 Chestnut St, followed at 11 am by a Mass of Christian Burial in Mater Dolorosa Church, with burial in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley.

Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 2 to 9 pm.

Betty Condon: He married Anna who died in childbirth. Baby was stillborn. Bill, Anna and baby are all buried in Polish cemetery in Holyoke, MA. He died of cirosis of the liver due to alcoholism. When Bill was about 12 years old he came to Minnesota by train. When he got off the train he couldn't figure out where the Indians were. He came to Minnesota again in 1948.

His prayer card says Bill was born in Holyoke, Mass on Mar 9, 1924 and died Nov 20, 1989. His mother was Mary O'Donnell (which is different than the information above). He died at the soldiers home in Holyoke. He was formerly the owner of the old Sorbi's Restaurant in Holyoke. He then went to work for the postal service as a letter carrier. He retired in 1986. He was an army sargent in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre in WWII. His wife Ann Margaret died July 2, 1960 along with his infant daughter. He is buried in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley, Holyoke. MA.
