Austin William KEENS

(9 January 1834 - 11 September 1866)

Artist - portrait and landscape painter --- Tragically, though, he was drowned at sea at the age of 32 . He had travelled to India to take up a commission to paint the Rajah, But on the return Voyage , his ship, The Bhima, was in a collision with another vessel and quickly foundered with great loss of life . The Painting of the Rajah Actually survived and must have been sent ahead or later sent to the family by the Rajah and is in the possession of Peter keens in Canada. --- Caroline Scott Research.

Noted in Marriage Cert of son - Edmund in 1897 that he was a water-colour artist

Death

SS Bhima (A Cargo steamship of 1194 Gross Tonnes, Built by Earles Ship building UK in 1864. The Bhima was lost in 1866 on a voyage from Bombay to Suez)[6]
