Notes
Census
The Missouri Census, 1830-1870 , compiled by Ronald V. Jackson and found at Ancestry.com website includes a listing for John Baker in the 1810, St. Louis Co., MO census in the Petitioners Township. This may be our John Baker since he was known to be in MO before 1813. The 1810 KY census shows 23 John Bakers but the 2 in Wayne Co. and 2 in Cumberland Co. do not match with John's age in 1810.
Marriage
The marriage record for John Baker and Agnes Denney was found on the back side of a sealed document in the Wayne Co., KY courthouse archives. Some researchers believe that Agnes Denney was married to a Jonathan Baker, not our John Baker, and that John Baker's first wife Wilhemina Johnson was the mother of Frances and Jonathan Baker. This is most strongly supported by the will of Wilhemina's father, David Johnson, in which he names all of John Baker's children as of 1823 as children of Wilhemina. Since Wilhemina had been dead about 10 years and Agnes about 3 years there may have been some confusion as to who was the mother of which children.
Residence
John and his wife Nancy lived 4 miles from Marble Hill on Crooked Creek in Cape Girardeau Co., MO in 1830. This area is now in Bollinger Co., MO.Census
The 1830 U.S. Federal Census for Cape Girardeau Co., MO, page 466 shows this listing for John Baker:1 male under 5; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 1 female under 5; 1 female 10-15 (Frances); 1 female 30-40 (Nancy Bolin Baker).
Listed on the next line is William Baker, age 20-30 with a male under 5 and a female 30-30. Could this be another son of John and Wilhemina?
Event-Misc
John and his son, Aaron, made a scouting trip to Arkansas to select land for new homes. They decided on land in present day Madison Co.Event-Misc
From Goodspeed's "Northwest Arkansas History, 1889" as quoted in "Hampton Family History" is this description of the Bakers move from Cape Girardeau Co., MO to Carroll Co., AR."John Baker and his sons, Aaron and Jonathan, left Cape Girardeau Co. on 10-11-1832. Their journey took them through Springfield, MO. to Fayette, AR, across the King River on 1-1-1833. They arrived in Carroll Co., AR on 1-3-1833. The homesite they chose was 3 miles west southwest of present day Berryville in Prairie Township. They first thought they would settle in Madison Co., AR but when they arrived at the land they had scouted someone else had already made claim to it."
Event-Misc
The Carroll Co., AR Tax Records show that from 1840 to 1860 he was one of the most prosperous farmers in the county.Census

The 1860 U.S. Census Slave Scedule for Carroll Co., AR, Prairie Township shows that John Baker had 3 female slaves, an adult and 2 children. These could be the slave, Mary, and her children. Nancy Bolin Baker inherited a slave named Mary in her father's will made on 1-8-1838. The 1850 Slave Scedule for Carroll Co., AR showed the estate of William Bolin (deceased) had 8 slaves. In 1850 a John Baker in Carrollton Township owned slaves but this is probabll\\y not our John Baker.Census

Burial
This cemetery is on private land and has suffered from lack of care. John Baker's grave is unmarked. In "Hampton Family History" his burial was listed as Shady Grove Cemetery. Shady Grove, Baker-Bussey, and the burial site of Frances Baker Hampton are all very close together and near John Baker's homesite.
Event-Misc
As listed in Coryell Co., TX marriage Book 9, a J.S. Baker performed the marriage ceremonies of Nola Williamson and Roy Hayes on 10-22-1916 and Daisey Williamson and Bob Huddle on 7-8-1916. This is likely a John Baker descendant.Endnotes
