From his Find A Grave Memorial:"Oakley was killed in the Civil War. This is an old family story that his wife's (Helen) father - James Calhoun Hill had paid for his release from the war due to Helen was overcome, however it was too late because Oakley was killed in battle. So, her father and a slave went to retrieve him for a proper burial. During the trip James got struck in his eyes with a tree limb that blinded him for balance of his life."
He was a corporal, Co. K., 3rd Texas Cavalry, in the Civil War.
