Rita Lokey's James Hicks Family History contains an article from "Mason News-Item" from 12-24-1878 that describes the manner in which James Louis Temple lost his life.James Louis Temple, a deputy sheriff in Kimble Co., TX, was shot by outlaw Thomas Doran in a Junction saloon on 12-21-1878.
Doran was subquently stabbed to death by James Louis Temple's father John E. Temple who was just outside the saloon when his son was shot.
