In 1872, William Hartgraves, the son of Wiatt Hall's neighbor Frances Hartgraves, was charged with swindling and theft of a mare. Wiatt Hall was one of the witnesses against Hartgraves. The case was continued until the January 1873 Coryell County court term, when the case was finally to be tried.On 1-17-1873, two men rode up to the Hall residence and called Wiatt Hall out to his gate, where one of the men fatally shot Wiatt before making their escape.
The man who shot Wiatt Hall was identified, presumably by Naomi Hall, as William Hartgraves.
The murder of Wiatt Hall and subsequent apprehension of William Hargraves in Kansas, October 1873, were reported in newspaper articles in the Galveston Daily News on 1-23-1873 and 10-17-1873. Hartgraves was returned by train to Waco, Texas, where his train was met by a group of vigilantes from Coryell County; there is no further information available on the fate of William Hartgraves.
