Ethel Rose Pliley

(23 Oct 1903 - 17 Feb 1995)

Beverly Gunter, a relative, through the Burt line, gave me the following information: Ethel Rose Pliley was a descendant of Lucretia Nuss, (born: 1839 in Green, PA, died: March 20, 1897 in Kansas) and Elijah Henry Garey, (born: June 18, 1841 in Somerset, PA, died: April 19, 1932, Yreka Ca). They had a total of eight children, the following are just a few: Lillie E. Garey born September 19, 1874, died January 4, 1900. Lula Edith Garey, born April 1, 1883, died June 15, 1957, and David Garey.

After Lucretia passed away, Elijah married Grace Delmar and they had eight children.

Lula Edith Garey married Albert Pliley (born: March 8, 1876, born in Cherokee, KS, died: July 18, 1908. They were married: September 27, 1899 in Columbus, Cherokee Co., KS, and they had several children, one being Ethel Rose Pliley. Albert's parents were: Margarett White (born: 1850, IL) and John Pliley (born: 1847, Ohio).

Lula Edith Garey married John Burt and they had a child named Harry Burt. He was Ethel's half brother.

Ethel Rose Pliley married Richard Monroe Robinson and they had three daughters: Alice, born December 13, 1920, died June 13, 1990. Beatrice, born Febraury 21, 1923, died January 9, 1989. Richard Monroe (yes a girl) born September 13, 1924, died 1991. Richard Monroe Robinson, the father, was killed before she was born in a mining accident and they thought it fitting to name the baby after her father. Richard always went by the name of Richie.

Ethel married George Delmar and they had two daughters: Rose Lee, born April 3, 1927, died 1936. She was named for Ethel's middle name and her brother Lee. Rose Lee was killed in a gun shot incident. Mary Katherine was born February 24, 1930, died February 27, 2012. It has been said that Ethel's mother, Edith, helped her run away from home to marry George Delmar, to get her away from John Burt, her husband at the time. George Delmar was a brother to Edith's stepmother, Grace.

It is said that Fred Stephenson paid for Ethel's divorce from George Delmar and then they didn't have the money to pay for a marriage licence. It has been said that they said marriage vows to one another and they considered themselves common-law married.

My grandmother was a person that, although she was not rich in finances, always had something great to eat. Grandma loved for us to climb up on the back of the old sofa and wrap our legs around her shoulders and comb her gray hair for hours. She never got tired of us giving her a new hairdo. She would just sit and watch TV, crochet, or play cards. She loved to play and beat "old sol". She really enjoyed baseball and especially the world series. She said her and her brothers used to play baseball. I remember it seemed like, even if it wasn't, we were always at grandma's house for Sunday lunch after Church. It seemed like all the cousins and aunts and uncles were there every Sunday. My grandma could make the best homemade yeast rolls, pinto beans, and cooked cabbage I ever ate. My grandmother taught me a lot and showed me a lot of things that girls just don't take interest in anymore. I didn't get to spend much time at grandma's house once I grew older and moved away and had a family of my own and I really regret not spending more time with her. I do remember calling her on occasion to ask her questions about how to do certain things or how to cure certain ailments. She always had the right answer for everything. The old home remedies were far better than seeing the doctor on occasion.

I will never forget the day I got the call that I needed to come home and see Grandma because she might not make it through the night. I arrived at the hospital in time to be with her and let her know that I was there before she passed away. As she slipped away from us, before my eyes, I knew she was going to be in a much better place. Grandma knew there was a heaven and she believed she would be there with Jesus real soon. We miss her greatly. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She believed in family. That is the heritage she left behind for us.
