Emma Myrtle Hays was born 7 Mar 1904 in Van Buren the child of Silas Newton Hays, b. Van Buren and Mary Elizabeth Winn, b. Columbia MS. Emma Myrtle Clements signed for herself. She lived at 10161 Stern Ave., Cupertino, California. 25 Nov 1956.
Supporting Evidence included the birth certificate of a child born 31 May 1922, made on 25 Aug 1941. (no idea who this was). Gave her age as 18.
A marriage license from Sebastian Co, AR, dated 17 Jan 1927 Gave her age as 22.
Affidavit of Gertrude Carter, age 68, dated 19 Nov 1956. Stated her birth date as 7 Mar 1904 and gave parents' names.

Found data about Emma Myrtle Hays in a Family Tree on Amazon.com. Some of the information has been accepted without proof. I have included here only what I was able to confirm with records.

Emma was apparently married first to a man named Smith as a stepdaughter, Arley Smith, age 7, is living with George & Emma Clement in 1930. There is an Arkansas Divorce record for Myrtle and George Smith, 30 Nov 1923, Cross County. In 1920, Emma was still at home with her parents. The family database has included this divorce so presumably it is the right first husband. What bothers me about this is that a George & Myrtle Smith were living in Sand Point, Crawford Co, in 1920 - they already had two young children and the divorce record indicates that they had married in 1915 - when Emma Myrtle Hays was only about nine years old. Therefore, I doubt this divorce is Emma's.

I also found a marriage in Crawford Co for Emma Hays to J. V. Smith - 31 Aug 1923. He was age 22, she was age 20, both of Van Buren. They were married by F. A. Lark, Minister. I believe this is Emma, and her Smith husband was not George at all.

Emma's death is in the California Death Index on Ancestry. Her middle name was given as Myrtle; her mother's name as Winn; her father's name as Hays. It is a bit odd that she died in California in 1982, and the George W. Clements found in SSDI died in Izard Co, Arkansas in 1991. Is he the right person? His birth as 15 Jan 1904 is reasonable, but the name is quite common.
