Hein Keppel
(Abt 1520 - 1580)
A list of the special tax to support the German Empire in its defense against the Turks, dated Jul 16, 1566, states that Hein Keppel ..is indebted to his brother Johann Holtzclaw, citizen of Siegen, 24 Florins; Hans, his brother, owes the same 18 Florins. Different "surnames" for brothers was common at this early period in Germany. The debts could be connected with the sellement of the estate of their father. Hein Keppel succeeded his probable uncle, Johann Keppel, between 1549 and 1563 as leassee of the property at Osthelden. Osthelden is not far from Nieder Holzklau in the parish of Ferndorf. The church brooks of Ferndorf record the burial of Keppelhein of Osthelden Nov 7, 1580.
