Russell was a self-proclaimed terra-culturist who lectured throughout New York about his discovery of a natural law in vegetable growth and life. He explained his principles which he did not put in print and which could not be patented or copyrighted. He claimed to have discovered the means of doubling crops and extending the life of fruit trees, etc.
