Individual Details
Alexander Thompson
(7 Mar 1816 - 7 Aug 1883)
Said to be the founder of Uniontown (Hickory Grove).
From "Early History of Uniontown" by G. M. Comstock: "Goodspeed records that Alexander Thompson, a pioneer farmer living near Van Burn, one day made a trip north from his farm on Lee Creek, crossed Webber Creek, continued north about three miles where he stopped to view the primeval forests while resting his horse. He decided this would be an excellent place to establish a trading post as the Cherokee Nation border was only one mile to the west of it. This would offer those people a place where they could purchase their needs. Some time later during the middle 1850's he began this venture by establishing a general store and shortly following this, he established a grist mill, saw mill, and cotton gin for the benefit of the farmers in the community and named the place Hickory Grove. Records show that this venture was destroyed by the Federal Army during the Civil War and was never rebuilt."
The "History of Crawford County" says the first store erected by Mr. Alexander Thompson was on the site of the home of Mr. J. M. Comtock.
Walked from his home to Fayetteville to enlist in the Union Army in 1863; served as a 1st Sgt in First Battery, Arkansas Light Artillery. Most of his service was at Union Headquarters in Rolla, MO.
