John Thomas

(17 Apr 1712 - )

The wife of John Thomas Jr. is unknown. There were 4, possibly 5, children. Two of the daughters married brothers, Joseph & Jacob Holtzclaw.
John Thomas and his brother Michael were granted land jointly in 1726 [probably at the time of their father's death] Spotsylvania Grant Book 12, p.476.

A John Thomas was naturalized in Orange Co VA on 24 Jan 1742. Orange Co Order Book 3, p.313.

John Thomas and wife Mary deeded land to his brother Michael in Feb of 1742. Orange Co DB 7, p.98. Mary was likely the mother of the children. When John made deeds of gifts to his daughters that had married the Holtzclaw brothers, his wife was given as Sarah.

I will try to get this correctly; I have goofed it up in the past.
John Thomas, Sr. married Anna Maria Blankenbaker in Germany. John Thomas, Jr. was born there. Apparently, he came to Virginia in 1717. Who John Thomas, Jr. married is unknown (he was married twice). It is of public record that one daughter (of John, Jr.) married Jacob Holtzclaw, one married Joseph Holtzclaw, one married Jacob Blankenbaker, and one married John Railsbach. There may also have been a son of John, Jr. named Michael.

BC Holtzclaw talks about the family of Susannah Thomas, the wife of Jacob Holtzclaw, son of Hans Jacob Holtzclaw and his second wife, Catherine. Susannah Thomas was married to Jacob Holtzclaw in 1758 in Culpeper Co., Va. She was born 20 Oct 1745 and died 10 Oct 1821, the daughter of John Thomas. John Thomas made a deed of gift of land to this Jacob Holtzclaw on 20 Nov 1760--BC cites the following record: Culpeper Co. Deed Book C, p. 439. Here's what BC states about them: "John Thomas's other children were Mary Barbara, wife of Jacob Blankenbaker, and Mary, first wife of Joseph Holtzclaw, Jacob Holtzclaw's younger brother, to whom John Thomas made similar deeds of give of land "for love and affection" in 1760 and 1762(Culpeper Deed Book C, p.439). John Thomas was born in Germany around the year 1715 and was naturalized Jan. 24, 1742 (Orange Co. Order Book 3, p. 313). His father and mother probably came over with the 1717 colonists to Germanna. His father apparently died early, for John Thomas and his brother Michael were granted land jointly in 1726 (Spotsylvania Grant Book 12, p.476). John Thomas and his first wife, Mary, deeded this land to Michael in Feb., 1742/3 (Orange Co. Deed Book 7, p. 98). This first wife was the mother of his children. By the time he made the deeds of gift in 1760 and 1762 he was married to a second wife, Sarah. John's brother, Michael Thomas, was born in virginia. His mother became the second wife of Michael Kaifer, the 1717 colonist, who in his will in 1762 mentions not only his own children, but "my deceased wife's children, John Thomas, Michael Thomas, Magdalene wife of Michael Smith, and Margaret wife of Henry Coller" (Culpeper Will Book A, p. 85). John Thomas last appears in the records of Culpeper Co. Nov. 18, 1771, when he and his wife Sarah deeded land (Deed Book F, p. 365), and seems to have died before 1782, the year in which the regular lists of tithables begin." This info is from BC Holtzclaw's book, "Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750," which is available through the Germanna Foundation.
