The 1860 census suggested that both Benjamin and Lucy had been married previously - the 1850 census confirms that.

I found evidence that Lucy had been married to a Preble prior to marrying Benjamin Comstock. Living in Argyle, Penobscot Co ME in 1850; a very large household of Prebles, Hh 21
Farmer Preble, age 43, b. ME as was all his family. Temperance, 35. M. J. 14 [female]. Wm. M. 12. Temperance 10. Farmer Jr. age 8. Charlotte 2.
Lydia, age 74, b. "N.B."
Lucy N. age 33, b. ME [probably Lucy Nye Eldridge]
Any S. age 11. H. E. age 10. Emily E. age 5.
Also in Argyle in 1850, Hh 28, next to Solomon Comstock, was the following that I believe to have been Benjamin's family - perhaps with the initials of husband & wife reversed. Notice the names of the children.

Taft, age 4, male. Female children: R. age 7, Lydia age 5, Abby age 2.
