John Harwood

John was the 5th child and 5th son of Richard and Anne Harwood.
John Harwood was commissioned a 2nd LT of the Upper Battalion of Militia for Montgomery Co MD and on 12 Sep was advanced to Captain. He served as Magistrate of the local court for Montgomery Co 1778 and 1779.

His will was dated 1820, probated in Montgomery Co MD on 21 Jan 1823.
Negro slaves to children: Gassaway Harwood, Henry Harwood, Leven Harwood, Elizabeth Jones, Margaret Lyles, Rebecca Breathwaite and Mary Harwood. Apparently children Anne and William were deceased. Son John is not listed here but he was living.
Wife Mary - all real & personal property during her life; at her death to be divided equally among all children
Sons Gassaway W. and Henry the dwelling-plantation known as "Harwood's Delight" of 200 acres, paying to each of their brothers & sisters $300. They were to provide a home for sister Mary Ann Harwood as long as she remained single.
Executors: wife and son Gassaway.

Personal estate was inventoried 23 Feb 1823 and appraised at over $10,000 including 14 slaves. Henry Harwood filed the papers. He also administered the estate of his brother Gassaway, but Henry himself died before the settlement of these estates. 31 Jul 1827, John H. Harwood, next heir-at-law of John Harwood and heir to his brothers' estate waived all rights of administration recommending John Beard.
