IN LOVING MEMORY
OF MRS. MARTHA SMITH LOONEY
Mrs. Looney was born in Marion County Tenn, March 30 1840. Her parents Mr. Abbot and Mrs. Charlotte Smith had five sons and five daughters. They raised their children in the old-time staunch Methodist faith to which they adhered until called higher. Miss Martha Smith was married to J H Looney Dec. 18, 1859. They lived happily together for 48 years before the Lord saw fit to take him home to Heaven some 14 years ago.
To Mr and Mrs Looney were born six children—two sons and four daughters, all living.
Mr. and Mrs. Looney raised their children as they were raised—christians to the core.
When the Lord saw fit to take Mrs Looney to rest, He sent the dark-winged messenger into her room Sunday morning Feb. 12, 1922 at 5 o'clock and said daughter, come up higher, "Enter Thou into the joys of thy Lord" and rest from your labors here on earth. She told her children as they gathered around her she enjoyed staying with them but the Lord needed her and she was ready and waiting to go. Glorious thought. Now my dear friends and neighbors this is just another tie drawing you to the great beyond.
After Mrs. Looney was taken sick she spent most of her time with her two daughters, Mrs. Coulter and Mrs Hunter of Kensington. The day we had to put her away was very raw but her popularity was attested by the fairly large crowd that attended the funeral at Cedar Grove church and the talk Rev L B Jones made from Rom. 8:16, 17, 18 was most appropriate. He touched upon the beauties of her character and urged while on earth.
while her eon earth.
There is only one of her parents' children living now, her brother, N. D. Smith, of LaFayette Ga.
Hers was a model home to visit, each and all of them making their friends so welcome and comfortable. She used to talk to us girls about the blessings that was vouchsafed to those who take Christ's yoke upon them and admonished us to always be true to our God and upright in every undertaking of life. Truly we can say "Blessed are they who die in the Lord, for they shall rest from their labors and cares."
A FRIEND.
NOTES
A few small notes on the original printing: "iiving" was a typo for "living," which I corrected, and "Rom. 816" is clearly Romans 8:16, so I added the colon. The garbled lines "urged while on earth. / while her eon earth." look like a typesetter's slip where part of a sentence was dropped, so I left them exactly as printed rather than guess at the missing words.
For your research, the useful details are her husband J. H. Looney (married 1859, died about 1908), her parents Abbot and Charlotte Smith, her daughters Mrs. Coulter and Mrs. Hunter of Kensington, her brother N. D. Smith of LaFayette, Georgia, and burial from Cedar Grove church.
