His first marriage was to Martha Cummings, daughter of Asa & Nancy Howerton Cummings. He required a guardian's consent as he was not yet 18.

In 1845 - Levi paid taxes on land previously owned by John Murphy in Macoupin County. He sold this property in April 1847.
