Virgil was married first to Bernice Avilla Bridgeman on June 21, 1928. They had one son, Gail Avery. Bernice died in 1929 of a ruptured appendix when she was 18 years old. Her son was only a few months old.
He married Marguerite Rebbeke on December 31, 1935 in Bartonville, Illinois.
