Russell, a Tenant Farmer
About 10:30 o'clock this morning, on the Smith-Kerr oil lease, six miles east of here, Louis Walker, son of B. G. Walker of this city, shot and killed Steve L. Russell, a tenant on his father's farm, using a double barrel shot gun, and firing two shots at the dead man. Seven large shot hit Russell just below the breat bone, causing death in a few moments.
Louis Walker has been engaged for some time in running the pump station of the Smith-Kerr Oil Company and the two men lived in houses only about 300 yards apart.
Immediately after the shooting Walker telephoned the sheriff's office of the tragedy and that he would be in and surrender. Accordingly he was soon in town consulting an attorney and a little after one o'clock came to the sheriff's office with his father.
A Sun representative talked with both the son and father, but neither cared to make any statement. The reporter was informed, however, that bad blood had existed for some time between the parties.
Walker was reared in Corsicana and has a wife and one child, while Russell leaves a wife and three children of his and two step-children. Walter is 23 or 24 years old and Russell was probably 37 or 38 years of age.
The only witnesses to the tragedy were Louis Walker's wife and a man anmed L. F. Hargraves.
Was Buried This Afternoon
The remains of the late Steve L. Russell, who was killed yesterday by Louis Walker, were buried in the Hamilton cemetery this afternoon. The remains were brought here yesterday and taken to the home of his brother-in-law, W. T. Thompson, on West Second Avenue, and the funeral took place from there this afternoon under the direction of Corsicana Lodge, No. 63, IOOF, of which deceased was a member.
In addition to a wife and children, mention of which was made yesterday, the deceased is survived by his father, L. F. Russell, who lives in the Retreat community; his sister, Mrs. W. T. Thompson of Corsicana, and a brother, N. A. Russell who works for the Texas Company. A son of the deceased, Tom Russell, is at work with the pipe line gang of the John Sealy Oil Co. in this city.
