John R. Forbes Jr., 73, a decorated World War II Army combat veteran, died Saturday at a local hospital after a long service-connected illness.
Born in Gloucester, Mass., a son of John R. Sr. and Gertrude Stack Forbes, he attended Portland parochial schools run by the Sisters of Mercy. As a teen-ager, worked for Western Union delivering messages on his bicycle.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bar Harbor in 1939 and 1940. He worked in the Forestry Department as a laborer, truck driver and processor on the gypsy moth project.
After separation from the CCC, Mr. Forbes went to work for Sanders Engineering in the South Portland shipyard, repairing small engines and compressors and keeping pumps running.
He joined the Army in 1942, trained at Fort Jackson, S.C., and served overseas in the campaign throughout Italy, including the Po Valley. He earned the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement during the North Apennines Campaign. He also earned the Purple Heart after being wounded in action in 1945 in the Po Valley.
Among his other awards are the Combat Infantry Badge and the European Theater Ribbon with four Campaign Stars.
He was discharged with a 60 percent service-connected disability on Dec. 21, 1945.
After the war he required frequent visits to the Veterans Administration hospital in Togus. When he was able to work, he did part-time longshore work on the waterfront.
He lived at Gray Manor for several years and was transferred to the Togus hospital in 1993, then to Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough in 1994.
Mr. Forbes enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing and visiting Deering Oaks with his children.
His wife, Edith Powers Forbes, and a son, Wayne, died previously.
Surviving are two sons, John R. II of East Hampton, Conn., and Thomas W. of Ledyard, Conn.; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Jane) Robinson of East Hampton, Conn., and Karen Robinson of East Haddam, Conn.; three sisters, Mrs. Hubert (Margaret) Reali of Old Orchard Beach and Carolina, Puerto Rico, Mrs. Joseph (Barbara) Paine of Saco and Fort Pierce, Fla., and Mrs. Charles G. (Catherine) Carswell of Portland; a brother Kenneth T. of Portland; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Chapel B, 199 Woodford St., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Rev. James Nadeau as the celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
