Inscription
TO
the Memory of/ WILLIAM GUPHILL
who died on the second day of December
eighteen hundred and twenty one;
aged sixty two years and fifteen days.
His kindness as a neighbour,
his candor as a man, his tenderness as a
Husband, and his humanity as a
master, gave him a standing in society,
a character for virtue, an esteem among
his friends, and a value in thy
affection of his bereaved Wife
which nothering can change.
Afflictions, sure, some time he bore
Physicians were in vain;
Till God did please by death to seize;
And ease him of his pain.
Underneath this tomb doth lie
Remember friend as you draw nigh;
Our comforts here how dear they be
Must part with all eternally.
