I do not have the original print; however, an original apparently was among the papers of Edwin Perry Hoskins, Sr., son of Samuel Hoskins, Jr. and Irene Perry. Dr. Edwin Ray Hoskins, a grandson of Edwin Perry Hoskins, Sr., owned the Hoskins homestead and the house in which these papers then remained. Dr. Hoskins printed the photo in question in "A Hoskins Family Record" (1963) and made the identification of the photo, presumably based on an inscription thereon or other identification, but I have no way of knowing that now. Dr. Hoskins clearly differentiated between Samuel Hoskins, Sr., whom he referred to as Revolutionary War Samuel Hoskins, and his son, Samuel, Jr., who served in the War of 1812. In the case of the latter, Dr. Hoskins printed a picture of the sword outfit that Samuel, Jr. used during the War of 1812. I have no indication that Dr. Hoskins was confused about their identities. I further note that Dr. Hoskins tracked down the grandson of Charles N. Parker, in whose studio the print in question was made, and extensively discussed their mutual family history. I suspect the print in question was pivotal in this discussion because it was through the studio address in Morristown, NJ that Dr. Hoskins was able to find William Hubert Parker, grandson of the studio founder. If William Hubert Parker had doubts about the identity of the print's subject, I am sure the discussion would have brought them out. So, at this point in time, I am trusting the scholarly work of the direct descendant, Dr. Hoskins, for his identification of the picture. I will go back and include a reference to the picture's source for more clarity.
