Mrs. Lydia Phelps, formerly of Lakeville, but for the past two years a resident of the town of Canadice at the home of her son, Henry Phelps, celebrted her 97th birthday last Friday. She is the oldest resident of this locality....
Mrs. Phelps was born on Nantucket Island, January 5, 1809, the daughter of Alexander and Priscilla Drew. After the death of her parents she in early childhood came with relative by canal to Weedsport, NY and from there by overland route to within a mile of the present site of Auburn State Prison. On June 4, 1829, she married Benjamin Phelps at Auburn. He assisted in drawing the stone for the building of the state prison. Later they moved to Ohio and after a short residence there returned to what is called Swamp Street at South Lima, and from there to Lakeville. Mr. Phelps died February 12, 1888, aged 83 years. Twelve children were born to them, but three of whom are linv, Mrs. Laura Meachum of South Lima, Mrs. Margaret Markham of Lakeville and Henry Phelps of Canadice. Mrs. Phelps has 27 living grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
