Gladys I. (Very) Colp, 87 years old, died in Longmeadow of Taunton Nursing Home, on May 31, 2011.
Born in Providence, RI on May 13, 1924, daughter of the late Alpha and Elsie (Jerome) Very. She was a graduate of Taunton High School and Bryant College. She spent most of her early years living in Concord, MA and her high school years and the early years of her marriage living in Rehoboth.
She was the wife of the late Albert Colp of for over 54 years before he died. The family lived on Horton Street for many years before she moved to the nursing home. She was a member of the Rehoboth Congregational Church where she assisted with the bazaars there. Gladys was associated with the West Dighton Christian Church, with caroling, bible study and church bazaars. She was bookkeeper at the Taunton Tobacco Company and later for Backlund Insurance Agency in Rehoboth. She loved traveling and camping, throughout New England and the east coast to Florida. She continued camping into her 80’s. She loved the cape, flying kites and supporting her two son’s scouting activities, who are both Eagle Scouts. She loved gardening, cutting the grass with her John Deer tractor, visiting her son in California playing board game Sorry, cribbage and Runney. She had a zest for life taking rides in gliders, ultralights, small planes and helicopter even into her 70’s. An avid Red Sox fan she cheered the team on especially when watching them on TV. Her kindness was felt by all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Robert Colp of Dighton and Thomas Colp and his wife Susan of CA. She is the grandmother of Jennifer Cabral, Jessica Colp, Jason Colp, Kimberly Colp and Joshua Colp and great grandmother of Ashley Craig and Jaylynn Cabral.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service in the West Dighton Christian Church, corner of Wellington and Horton Streets, Dighton on Wednesday June 8, 2011 at 2PM. followed by a collation in the Fellowship Hall of the Church. Arrangements by the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. Taunton, MA
