Walter Blaine May Sr., 86, died Nov. 8, 2009, at the Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Wash. A viewing was held Nov. 12 and 13 at Burns Mortuary in Hermiston and the memorial service was held Nov. 14 at the Christian Life Center in Heppner. A private burial will be at the Canyon City Cemetery.
Mr. May was born March 25, 1923, near Ontario, to Blaine and Effie Stone May.
On Nov. 25, 1943, he married Jewell Benintendi.
A longtime resident of Grant County, he lived in Prairie City and Bates. For over 40 years, he worked for Edward Hines Lumber Company as a diesel mechanic. His hobbies included hunting, gardening, carpentry and wood crafts.
He lived in Heppner for the past 15 years.
Survivors include his sons, Walter May Jr. of Hermiston, James May of John Day and Rick May of Irrigon; daughter, Susan Rees of Sacramento, Calif.; brothers, Clarence and Jess; three sisters, Evelyn, Vera and Esther; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell May, in 2005; three sisters, Grace, Iva and Edna; and two brothers, Melvin and Mark.
