HER ONE REGRET AT 100 - SHE COULDN'T VOTE
Former Teacher was Unable to Cast Ballot for Willkie
A frail, white-haired woman, who "thought the world had come to an end" when Abraham Lincoln died, celebrates her 100th birthday here tomorrow with one regret-she was unable to vote November 5 for Wendell Willkie.
Ever since women could vote, explained Mrs. Abbie E. Smith, 4028 Chestnut St., she has cast her ballot for the Republican candidate for President.
"I wanted to vote for Mr. Willkie but I just couldn't get to the polls," she said.
Born near Chester, Conn., Mrs. Smith was a public school teacher until her marriage In 1864 to a justice of the peace there. He died 35 years ago, Mrs. Smith continuing to reside in Chester until five years ago, when she came here to live with several of her grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith said she and a group or friends learned of Lincoln's death at a supper. "It seemed to all of us," she said, "that the world had come to an end. It was terrible."
Some years ago the one-time school teacher became interested in work for the blind and until recently, gave many of them instructions in fashioning knickknacks from cardboard. She still manages to attend church services except in most severe weather.

Buried 17 July 1941, Deep river, Middlesex Co, CT.
