Here are a few brief notes which I have collected over the years:
ROBERT HARRIS, son of TYREE HARRIS. (b. ca 1768, probably in Orange Co.,
NC; d. bef Dec 1798, Caswell Co., NC) Refer to the biography of his father
Tyree Harris concerning Robert's guardianship Oct 1787 (Caswell Co. court
minutes). His brother, Sampson [Simpson] Harris also choose the same
guardian in 1787.
A Robert of Granville Co. appears early in Caswell Co. deed books.
The following almost certainly applies to the son of Tyree Harris:
Caswell Co. DB F-193-4 Cornelius Dabney of CC to Robert Harris of same,
for 160 pds, 200 A on Hoster's Cr. (Horsley Cr) 18 July 1789. Wit: Duke
Williams, Tyree Harris.
(Katherine Kerr Kendall, CASWELL COUNTY DEED BOOKS 1777-1817 [Easley,
SC: Southern Historical Press, 1989]. p. 111)
According to will of his father Tyree Harris, 1786, Caswell Co., NC,
Robert was to get land in Rockingham Co. on Little Troublesome Cr. Robert's
mother, according to was Tyree's second wife, Mary Ann Simpson, daughter of
Richard Simpson, Sr. and his wife Mary Kincheloe Simpson of Caswell Co., NC.
Robert's widow was reportedly Agnes Payne. Refer to her biography. Agnes
Payne Williams, widow, married Marmaduke Williams Dec 25, 1798.
Minutes of Caswell Co. October court 1787 note: Robert Harris, son of Tyra
Harriss choosed [sic] Lancelott Johnston his guardian; Sampson [Simpson]
Harris chose Lancelott Johnston his guardian.
(Katherine Kerr Kendall, Caswell Co. 1777-1877 Historical Abstracts of
Minutes of Caswell County, North Carolina as found on FHL film 1036557, Item
3)
These entries indicate that both sons were under age 21 but over the age of
14 in that they were allowed to choose their own guardian. Some of the other
children were under age 14, as indicated by this entry:
Jan 21, 1788
Cornelius Dabney, guardian to Edy Harriss, orphan of Tyra Harriss, also
guardian for Lydia and Christopher Harris. (FHL film 1036557, Item 3)

Here is some information concerning Robert Harris's wife Agnes Payne.
(Seldom do we genealogists have much information on the wives of our
ancestors or of collateral families. )
AGNESS HARRIS NEE PAYNE. (1775-1850 dob unverified)
According to a long-ago query, 1896, in VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND
BIOGRAPHY, v. 3, concerning the Williams family, Hon. Marmaduke Williams (see
Wheeler's HISTORY OF NORTH CAROLINA, PART II, p. 78), "a great-grandson of
the emigrant above [John Williams I and wife Mary," married Mrs. Agnes Harris
nee Payne, the widow of Robert Harris (son of Tyra Harris and Mary Ann
Simpson). She was a cousin of Mrs. Dolly Payne Madison. They had, among
other children, one named Madison Williams and one named Dolly Payne Williams
(the writer's grandmother). Can any one give exact relationship to Mrs.
Madison, names of Agnes (Payne) Williams' parents, and sources for a full
account of the Payne family?" /s/ Descendant."
Supposition is that this unidentified query was submitted by Thomas
McAdory Owen, Sr. (1866-1920), of Alabama State Archives, who was conducting
much research of the Williams family of colonial Granville Co., NC during
this time period. Rather recently, in the 1990s, some of Owen's notes on
Granville Co. (but not Caswell Co.) residents have been published by Southern
Historical Press. The book is entitled (loosely) History and Genealogies of
Granville Co., NC. A microfilm of the original notes, according to the
preface of the book, are in the Library of Congress.
Maud Carter Clement in THE HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA has a
footnote on page 144 concerning the Payne family. Agnes Payne was one of
several children of Robert Payne whose will was probated at Pittsylvania
Courthouse 19 Dec 1785. His wife was Anne Burton of Goochland Co. The info
does not state the date of marriage of Agnes to Marmaduke Williams, and it
provides no info re Marmaduke. [Lynchburg, VA: J. P. Bell, Inc., 1929)
Quoting from the lineage of Thomas McAdory Owen, Jr. (1894-?) in Virkus's The
Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol. V, Agnes Payne's lineage is linked
with that of Dolly Madison. (Virkus is considered secondary information, at
best, but since Owen was a careful researcher, this information is probably
fairly reliable.)
Her [that of Agnes Payne] grandfather was Josiah. One of Josiah's sons was
John, who was the father of Dolly who married President Madison. Father of
Josiah was George, and grandfather was William, according to the referenced
lineage of Owen.

Abstract of Will of Tyree Harris, Father of Above-Named Robert Harris
Will of Tyree Harris
In his will, made 1 Sep 1786 and recorded in Caswell Co., NC will book
B-162, Tyree named as executors his son Tyree and his son Simpson as well as
his son-in-law, Cornelius Dabney. His children were Nancy Abercrombie;
Frances, wife of Cornelius Dabney; sons Tyree, Simpson, Robert (to receive
land in Rockingham Co. on Little Troublesome Cr.) Other daughters were Ede
Harris (wife of Duke Williams), Liddy Harris. He named a grandson William
Chapman Abercromby.
(Comment: It is interesting that Tyree named as his executors his minor
sons, Tyree and Simpson. I have not read the filmed will. By 1789, judging
by the deed from Cornelius Dabney to Robert Harris, Robert had come of age.
This is speculation only.)
