FindAGrave Memorial # 81427969
An original member of the Trinidad Indian village of Tsurai, Lizzie was born anywhere from 1862 to 1865. Her tombstone shows she died in 1914 when in fact she died on July 7, 1915. No death certificate was filed but her obituary was published in a local newspaper in July 1915. Her father was Tsurai Billy and her mother was a woman from the Tolowa tribe (of Del Norte County). Her sister was Emma Aaw-Mae Billy who later married Jan-et Peters (also known as Trinidad Pete).

Lizzie lived her entire life in Trinidad. She had three daughters with Thomas Bailey*, a gold miner who came to Trinidad before 1880 - Amanda A., Emma Grace, and Jane Ione Bailey. After Thomas Bailey left to pursue gold mining in Siskiyou County she had two sons with Frederick August Riecke: Harvey (who died at 2 years of age) and Frederick Riecke (Jr.) who left Humboldt County in 1920, never to return.

At some point in her life she lost her sense of sight and then was known as "Blind Liz". She is buried next to her sister Emma and her son Baby Harvey. Next to them is her granddaughter and namesake, Elizabeth McDonald, the youngest child of Jane Ione Bailey and Edward McDonald of Big Lagoon.

Thomas Bailey.
Winifred Beach of Trinidad found the body of Thomas Bailey by a smoldering campfire beside the road between Arcata and Bald Hills last Wednesday (April 12). He was returning from Bald Hills on horseback. He had proceeded about 8 miles when a medium size dog met him; acting peculiarly. He followed it into some wild cuts. Dog stood over the body and would not permit him to touch it. He went to the home of Sherman Lyons -- got party of nine to return. Found pocket knife near. $15.90 on body. Took remains to home of Mr. Lyons. Beach telephoned Eureka from Trinidad. Mr. Skinner, deputy coroner, went out. Mr. Beach thinks he was murdered. He met two men, strangers, on his way to the hills and again when returning.
According to information at hand, the deceased was a man of about 62 years of age, and at one time had lived at Trinidad, but he had been absent from there for the past 20 years, and it is supposed was returning to pay a visit to his daughters. For the past score of years he had been mining and much of the long time had been spent in Siskiyou County. Where there he often communicated with his daughters: Amanda Bailey living at Orick, Mrs. Edward McDonald (formerly Jane Ione Bailey) of Trinidad, and Mrs. David Hufford (formerly Emma Grace Bailey), also of Trinidad. CORRESPONDENCE - Blue Lake: Thos. Bailey, who committed suicide by the road side and whose body was found last week by Winfield Beach, was buried by Sherman Lyons at Elk Camp in the Bald Hills a few days later. Death reported in the Blue Lake Advocate, April 15, 1905 (copy found in the Susie Baker Fountain Papers, Volume 111, Page 207).

IS HE OF YOUR FAMILY?
In the Bald Hills above Orick, California about one-fourth mile above Elk Camp there used to be an old water stop for the stage coach. In 1900 Tom (or John) BAILY (sic) committed suicide two miles west of Elk Camp. He was buried 200 yards above the present Elk Camp fire station. About 1946 the young fire fighters of the camp found the grave and wooden marker. They dug up the skeleton to experiment on it, but the foreman of the camp made them return the body and marker. Since then bulldozers, etc., have knocked down the marker and scraped the grave at different times. Finally, sometime around 1950 the sheriff's office of Humboldt took the skeleton --- to where?
