William Cloud Hicklin III, was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the first child of William Cloud Hicklin, Jr., and Ann Carson Hicklin. His formative years were happily spent with his parents and sister, Mary Ann, in the Blue Ridge Mountains on Hicklin Hill, near Arden, North Carolina. He attended a nearby boarding school, Christ School, for several years beginning in the eighth grade and graduating in the Class of 1949. He spent one post graduate year at The Marion Institute in Marion, Alabama in preparation for entering the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating in 1954 Bill began flight training in Pensacola, Florida, and after receiving his wings remained in Pensacola for several years as a naval flight instructor. He then moved to the west coast and was a jet pilot for most of the twenty years he spent in the Navy. He spent four tours in Vietnam. Thereafter he lectured in California followed by a four year tour of duty in Oberammergau, Germany representing the U. S. Navy for NATO. Upon retiring from the Navy, Bill worked as an engineer for Firestone in Hopewell, Virginia for several years, followed by a short time as a consulting engineer at DuPont. Bill served the Chester Presbyterian Church both in the capacity of Deacon and Elder. He and his family have felt very close to this church, perhaps partially because his grandmother, Anna Steele Poag Hicklin, attended this church when she was a boarding student at The Chester Female Academy in the 1880's. Until he became ill with colon cancer, Bill pursued interests In classic airplanes, especially through the Virginia Aviation Museum, and in antique clock restoration and repair. He died in Chester, Virginia on December 9, 1986.
Bill was married to Marian Mabry Austin on November 21, 1959, in Coronado, California. Both of their sons were born in Oxnard, California.
He is buried in The Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery family plot near Chester, South Carolina.
