Officer to be editor of Stars and Stripes
The new chief editor of Pacific Stars and Stripes will be a uniformed officer despite recommendations by Congress that a civilian hold the post at the newspaper, which serves the American troops.
Saturday's edition said Marine Col. Walter S. de Forest will replace Air Force Col. Edwin J. Montgomery as commander and editor-in-chief when Montgomery retires in the spring.

The US Air Force colonel in charge of the Pacific Stars and Stripes resigned today, saying the Pentagon ombudsman had criticized him for managing the news published in the paper serving U.S. troops overseas.
"I believe it was appropriate for the good of the organization to tender my resignation" Col. Edwin J. Montgomery said.
....Montgomery, who has denied censoring the paper, is retiring from the military later this years, and his replacement already has been named.
