Margaret Losh

(Abt 1830 - )

The 1860 Census suggests that Margaret had three sons from her first marriage to Wyse. They are listed with the Asbell surname but do not fit in the family of Ross Asbell. These boys were James age 17, Lewis age 11, both born in Ohio as was their mother, and George age 6, born in Missouri.

Delmar Asbill originally had Margaret's maiden name as Dresslar and phonetically spelled her married name as Wyse.
She was obviously mis-identified. I received the following email on 5 Dec 2025:

I’m researching the family of Jacob Losh who was born abt 1796 in PA, died Oct 1850 in Licking Co, Ohio. Deed records indicate that one of Jacob’s daughters was Margaret, the wife of Samuel Weiss. Margaret would later marry Ross Asbell/Asbill.

Your tree shows that Margaret's maiden name was Dresslar, but I’ve found information to the contrary.

"Genealogy of Dresslar-Tresslar Families" p. 16, states that Margaret, born 20 Oct 1830, died single.

She's listed with her parents in 1850 (as Martha) and with her mother and siblings in 1860 and 1870 in Johnson County, Indiana. In all censuses, she was single without children. It doesn't appear that she ever left Indiana.

Samuel and Margaret Weiss were listed in the 1850 census in Licking Co, OH, with their children James, age 3, and Lewis, 1.

Deed records of Licking County, OH, show that On 25 March of 1851, Jacob Losh’s heirs sold a parcel of land (the E1/2 of the SW1/4 in Sec 24, Twp 4, Range 11) they equally inherited. The record doesn’t specifically name them as Jacob’s heirs, but they were his known children. Three days earlier, Margaret and Samuel Weiss had separately sold their share in the same parcel. Another of Jacob's daughters, Mary Losh Banning, who was in McLean County, IL, signed a quit claim releasing “her interest as an heir at law to the estate of Jacob ‘Lash’ … of Licking County, Ohio.” It was 1/8 interest in the same parcel sold by Jacob's other children.

In 1852, Samuel and Margaret Weiss had their third child, George Washington Weiss, born in Putnam Co, Missouri (per delayed birth certificates in Montague Co, TX, of two of his children).

On 19 Jan 1857, Henry B. Oldaker of Licking Co, OH, sold to Margaret Weiss of Putnam Co, MO, 80 acres in the E1/2 of the SW1/4 of Sec 5 Twp 65 Range 16 situated in Putnam County.

On 11 Oct 1857, Margaret “Wyse” married Ross Asbell/Asbill in Putnam Co, MO.

In 1860, Ross and Margaret were in Crawford Co, AR. Children were: James, Lewis, George, Mary and Lydia, all with the surname Asbill. James, Lewis and George, however, belonged to Margaret, the children of her first husband Samuel Weiss. Mary was Ross' daughter from a previous marriage, and Lydia was Ross and Margaret’s daughter.

In 1870, George and Lewis Weiss were in Newton County, MO.

I’ve found deed records in Putnam Co, MO, showing George Weiss to be the heir of Samuel Weiss deceased and that George, Lewis “Wise” and James Weiss held interest in the exact parcel sold by Henry B. Oldaker to Margaret Weiss. (It looks like George and Lewis had sold their interest in the land and James was contesting the partition of it.)

James Weiss (aka James Wice) md Rosaline Drake and died in Montague Co, Texas in 1899. George Weiss died in Montague Co in 1917. His death certificate (at Ancestry) shows his parents to be Samuel Weiss and Margarett LOSH. James and George are buried in Montague County, TX.
