Began his career as a Blacksmith but later owned and operated the Smitherman Buggy Works in East Bend, It was the second largest buggy plant in the area.then with the coming of automobiles, he and his son Robert turned to automotive repair.

Poindexter book has this date for marriage - 10 June 1889 - in 1900 they had been married 16 years so the 1884 year is correct.

Thomas Alexander Smitherman died 25 Apr 1927, East Bend, Yadkin Co, NC of apoplexy (stroke). He was married to M. A. Smitherman. Born 15 Jun 1858 in East Bend. A retired farmer. Father listed as A. P. Smitherman; mother unknown. T. D. Smitherman of East Been was the informant (likely his son). Buried Baptist Cemetery, April 27th.
