Nellie Belle Van Over Haden
Nellie Belle Van Over Haden was born June 27, 1913, in St. Louis, Mo., and passed away Sunday, June 11, 2006, in Austin, Texas, of natural causes but was a breast cancer survivor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewitt T. Haden, in August 1965, at which time she moved to Austin. Nellie and Dewitt were married April 15, 1942, in McAllen, Texas, and had no children. Nellie was an only child. Her parents, George F. and Bertha M. Van Over, preceded her in death.
Nellie was a 1930 graduate of McAllen High School and attended Tulane University. She was a staunch Democrat and worked in the many LBJ campaigns during his career, the Texas Women for Hubert Humphrey campaign and numerous Jake Pickle for Congress campaigns. She also worked in the Austin office for the LBJ administration.
Nellie had a twenty-eight year successful insurance sales career with AFLAC and was an active licensed agent until her death. She enjoyed many sales honors and attended many company trips. Her most notable she always said was the trip she earned to London, England, in 1983.
No flowers please but donations may be made to the John B. Amos Cancer Center, AFLAC, 1932 Wynnton Rd, Columbus, GA 31999.
A viewing will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, with a service beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A reception for friends will follow at the funeral chapel. There will be no burial to follow. Nellie will be cremated and her ashes buried with Dewitt in McAllen, Texas.
