On FamilySearch a researcher has placed this man in the family of Robert Walters and Joannah McBee. Although little is known about their son named William - he seems to have been a very different person. They were probably close to the same age. At this point the relationship cannot be ruled out, but it seems highly doubtful. There are thirteen children, most with names not characteristic of Robert Walters family.

A son William married a woman with the middle name Spier (her mother's maiden name) which is perpetuated in descendants' given names. Perhaps this led to mis-identification. There is a great-nephew of Robert Walters' who was named Spiers Walters - but he was named for his mother, Eleanor Spiers. Neither Spiers name came from the Walters side of the family.
