Elizabeth "Betty" Stamps

(11 Nov 1797 - Abt 1868)

Elizabeth "Betty" Stamps was born Nov. 11, 1797. In 1812,Elizabeth was being courted by William Jackson, of Tennessee, and Stephen R. Roberts of Cairo, Missouri. It appears that, judging by Mr. Robert's letter, that Elizabeth and her sister, Nancy, had been living in Cairo about 1812 and had known him there. It also appears that Elizabeth and Nancy had recently moved to Nashville, TN.

Elizabeth married (1st) William Jackson sometime before Nov. 22, 1815; as on that date, she wrote a letter to the General Land Office in Austin,Texas, signed "Mrs. Jackson". On the same date, her sister, Nancy, wrote her a letter addressed to "Mrs Elizabeth Jackson" and mentions a bet which she, Nancy, had lost to Wm. Jackson.

Elizabeth & William Jackson had only one son who died and was buried Oct.15, 1823. It is assumed that Mr. Jackson is dead as only Mrs. Jackson is mentioned in their son's obituary.
A. A son. "Friends and acquaintances of Mrs. Jackson are requested
to attend her son's burial from her house to the public burying
ground at 11 o'clock this morning, Wednesday, October 15,1823."

Elizabeth married (2nd) Stephen R. Roberts, probably before Nov. 17,1828; on which date their daughter, Kathryn Mary "Kate" Roberts was born.

On March 02, 1838, Stephen R. Roberts received a land grant of one league and one parcel of land located in DeWitt County, Texas and patented them on April 30, 1845. The certificate states that he arrived in Texas in 1833 and was a married man, entitled to land upon paying the statutory rate governing sale of land as of that date. File, Gonzales 1st Class 71& 72.

About Thanksgiving Day of 1838, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts purchased a league of land for $6,000 at what became known as Mt. Vernon, TX. One day, Mark K.Roberts went to the front door and there stood Judge John Stamps, her uncle, with his wife, daughter and son. In the winter of 1842, Judge Stamps purchased this land from his sister and her husband. They settled on the land in DeWitt Co., TX. Within a few year's span, Betsy Roberts, two sons of Judge Stamps along with his wife and daughter, Mary, passed from this land. They are buried in Prairie Lea, TX, facing south.
