NSU Hall of Famer, Tennis Legend Jack Kisner Dies at 83
TAHLEQUAH -- Dr. Jack A. Kisner, whose love of tennis and dedication to
Northeastern State University were combined for a rewarding and legendary
career, died Wednesday. He was 83.
Dr. Kisner was a three-year letterman in tennis and a member of the
Redmen basketball team before graduating from Northeastern State in 1932.
But it was in tennis that his name would become known and respected as a
player and coach not only throughout Oklahoma, but also across the nation
and even across the oceans.
He was the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference tennis champion in 1932
and became a member of the USA Gordon Cup tennis team that competed in
international tennis. During a lifetime which produced an untold number of
Missouri Valley championships in singles, doubles and father-son doubles, he
was ranked No. 1 several times in different age divisions of Missouri Valley
and state of Oklahoma competition.
He served as tennis coach at NSU for 17 years and was selected as NSU
Alumnus of the Year in 1982. He was inducted in the NSU Athletic Hall of
Fame in 1988.
Besides his coaching stint, Dr. Kisner served at NSU as registrar,
director of teacher education, director of placement services, professor of
education and director of audio-visual education.
He was also an outstanding basketball and football official for high
school and college. His officiating career covered the decades of the 1930s
through the 1970s.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. While in service, he
authored a flight manual that was used to train American pilots during the
war.
He remained very active throughout his life and played competitive tennis
regularly until a heart attack in March, 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Tahlequah and five children:
David Kisner of Oklahoma City, Bob Kisner of Huntington Beach, Calif., Ann
Radebaugh of Broken Arrow, John Rickey Templeton of Phoenix, Ariz., and
Frances Ann McDaniel of Tulsa; sisters Frances Sims of Bristow, Alice
Hudspeth of Pascoe, Wash., and Kate Cushing of Tulsa; brother Dick Kisner of
Tulsa.
Funeral services under the direction of Hart Funeral Home are scheduled
for 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church in Tahlequah.
