Clinton Shepard Haggard
(12 Nov 1838 - 30 Jun 1930)
Plano, Collin Co, TX histories state that the Haggard family originated in Denmark, migrated to England and then to America - that they were in the colonies early is indisputable. The connection to Denmark seems highly questionable. Some of the genealogies online trace the family back two generations in England through an Anthony Hoggard, and Peter Hogard - no sources provided.
Originally buried in old Bethany Cemtery, but were re-interred in Restland.
Served in Alexander's Regiment and later in Martin's Regiment during the Civil War.
Clinton Shepard Haggard, youngest son of John and Mourning Quisenberry Haggard was born in Winchester, Kentucky. His mother died when he was eight years old and when he was 18, he and his father came to Texas and settled on a section of land near Plano. Sept. 1, 1859, he married Nannie Kate Lunsford and they became the parents of 9 children. When the Civil War began Clint Haggard joined Confederate forces and served in Alexander's Regiment and later in Martin's Regiment. After the war he returned to his home and became a successful landowner and stockman. In 1904 he gave each of his children 320 acres of land and retained farms in Collin and Denton Counties. Both he and his wife were members of the Christian Church and contributed liberally to the Church and church related universities and homes.
When Clinton and his father John first came to Texas, they were part of the Peters Colony - they settled near White Rock Creek, just to the East of the Dallas North Tollway between Parker and Spring Creek. The Collinwood house, the family home, built in 1861, is at 5400 Windhaven Parkway in Plano.
