Archelaus Mitchell

(Abt 1732 - 1792)

Not proved as son of Archelaus and Ann Reed Mitchell
There is no record of this Archelaus's birth at St. Peter's Parish where the births/baptisms of the other children were born. Some have placed this Archelaus as a son of Thomas, making him a nephew of Archelaus, b. 1703, but this is highly unlikely - Thomas did have a son Archeluas whose birth was recorded and who married Mary Gregory, daughter of Richard Gregory. Perhaps the failure to record this Archelaus's birth was an oversight.

There is a single record in The Douglas Register of the baptism of Sally Mitchell, daughter of Archelaus Mitchell and Hannah Kirby. Sally was born 8 Nov 1761 and baptized on 9 May 1762. The parents are listed in the "implied marriage" section since they were named.

This family moved to Amherst which may explain why no other records are found in Goochland.

The following marriages recorded in Amherst (Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940; FamilySearch.org)
Presumably at least some are children of Archelaus and Hannah - it's doubtful any of these could be grandchildren since the younger Archelaus was the first male to marry in 1784. However, there are a lot of these marriages (14 of them) - I suspect more than one older Mitchell was in Amherst - yet no father other than Archelaus was listed and in the case when a mother was listed, it was after it is believe Archelaus had died - she was listed as "Ann Mitchell" but many Hannahs are also called Ann. It is also true that no given name is repeated among the fourteen recorded marriages.
