Barbara Jane Abernethy, 85, widow of H. Mitchell Abernethy, Jr., passed away May 13, 2015 after a long illness. Barbara was born January 18, 1930 in Berwyn, Illinois to Beulah and Calvin Phillips. She married H. Mitchell Abernethy June 17, 1949 in Glen Elllyn, Illinois. Together they traveled and lived in many countries outside the USA as she accompanied her husband on his 40 year international career with Union Carbide. They settled in Seneca, SC in 2000. Barbara's passions included history, genealogy, gardening and cooking with her family. Barbara is survived by her daughters and their families: Sharon Scott (Graham) Mount Pleasant, SC; Catherine Wisner (James) Houston, TX; Alexandra Heijkoop (Aart) Esporles, Mallorca, Spain, and her grandchildren Siobhan, Meagan, Douglas, Stephanie, Roxanne, Nathalie, and Mitchell. Barbara is also survived by her brothers Calvin Phillips (Paula) Sierra Vista, Arizona, and William Phillips (Carol) Fountain Inn, SC. A gathering to celebrate Barbara's life will be held at a future date. The family would like to thank Hospice of Charleston and Gentiva Hospice of Greenville for all their excellent care.
