MATLOCK FUNERAL SLATED MONDAY AT VAN BUREN
Funeral Services for Edgar Lee Matlock, 71 years old, widely
known Van Buren lawyer, who died Saturday afternoon in a Ft.
Smith hospital, will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock at the chapel of the Ocker Funeral home, with Rev J T
Byrd, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery. Judge Matlock had not
been well for several weeks, suffering from a heart ailment,
but until this week his condition apparently was improved.
He was taken to the hospital Friday night. The death of Judge
Matlock removes a prominent figure in the affairs of Van Buren
and Crawford county. He was born March 19, 1867, at Dripping
Springs, and had lived his entire life in the county. He was
the son of William A Matlock and Harriet Stewart. Judge Matlock
was admitted to the bar Feb 17, 1890 and had been a practicing
attorney nearly half a century. He had occupied the same office
at 501 Main Street, Van Buren 49 years. At the time of his death,
Judge Matlock was attorney for the Crawford county levee district
board and the district water board, and had served as attorney
for several paving, curb and gutter, sewer and other improvement
districts of Van Buren. Judge Matlock had served four years as
a city clerk, four years a an alderman and 14 years as city
attorney of Van Buren. He filled the unexpired term of County
Judge E. D. Cochrane, who died in 1911, and served 20 months under
appointment from Governor George W. Donaghey. At the expiration
of the term, he was not a candidate for election During his term
as county Judge, Crawford county went on a cash basis. He served
served as a member of the state board of charities under an
appointment from Governor John Sebastian Little. Judge Matlock was
married April 24 1895, to Miss Betty Dean, who died Feb 6, 1938.
He was a member of the First Methodist church and of the Knights
of Pythias. He formerly was a member of the Rotary club.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Eugene P Wheeler of Ft Smith,
and Mrs Smith Mace of Van Buren: two sons James Matlock of
Joinerville Texas and Edgar Lee Matlock Jr., of the family home:
two sisters Mrs. M L Snow of Uniontown and Miss Lille Matlock of
Fort Smith, three brothers, J David Matlock and A Sidney Matlock
of Fort Smith and W H Matlock of Van Buren; and three grandchildren
Billy Wheeler of Fort Smith and Neville Matlock and Adelia Jo
Matlock of Joinersville, Texas.
