Shenandoah, Page Co, Iowa in 1940. Father was Carl Haden, age 30, b. in Missouri; mother was Mary Jane, age 31. Carl Jr. was 13, Mary Elizabeth 11, James Lowell, 7, and Charles Edward "Charlie" was 2 - he was the only child born in Iowa, the others were born in Missouri. The employment of his parents listed as "Entertainers - Radio Station".

There is something a little strange about Virginia/Mary Jane other than the fact she is listed with two different names in the census. Buried Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Greene Co. MO are Carl & Virginia. Her dates are 28 Nov 1914 - 20 Jul 2007. This birth is five years later than indicated in the two censuses above.

Found in Google Books, the cookbook, The Route 66 Cookbook: Comfort Food for the Mother Road, p.47, Missouri chapter.
...Farther west on Chestnut is the 7 Gables Restaurant, the oldest Route 66 eating place still in business on the historic road in Springfield. Built in the 1930s the restaurant was a two-story affair with seven imposing gables. The café has had several owners and a roller-coaster existence. Today, Perry Lin and his wife own the historic location. Carl Hayden Jr. remembers his family operating the 7 Gables in the late 1940s. Carl said his dad put up the biggest neon sign in the Springfield area.
The Hayden family had a direct hookup with Radio Station KWTO and broadcast from the restaurant with Uncle Carl and the Hayden family singing folk music. They were an important part of the famous Ozark Jamboree Music that originated in Springfield. The Hayden family had an apartment on the second floor above the restaurant. When a kitchen fire destroyed the place in 1949, they sold out and moved to Nebraska....
